From our Friends Out in Oddsville

June is definitely the month of Oddball parades, and no matter how much I may be crying over missed Pride this year, nothing makes me sadder than being absent (yet again) from the motherfucking Mermaid Parade, the most costumey, tricked out thing to happen to Coney Island since the Warriors, at least. Because I can’t go and regret it like hell, I’m egging you on, with a word from our (erstwhile) sponsors.

Mermaid Parade Call for Volunteers

It’s time to dust off your sea shells and wax those fins!  This year’s Coney Island Mermaid Parade is just around the corner on Saturday, June 20th.  Without volunteers the parade couldn’t stay afloat.

We rely on over 150 volunteers each year to steer the parade into safe harbor.  Volunteer positions include registration, check-in, merchandise, crowd control, wrangling, surveys, holding signs and hustling the crowd.  Volunteers will be handsomely rewarded with generous sunshine (mother nature abiding), salt air, and hilarious company (as well as the much-coveted volunteer t-shirt!).  To register please send a message in a bottle (or just email) Katie & Jesse to request a volunteer form at MermaidParadeVolunteer@yahoo.com.

About the Mermaid Parade:

A completely original creation of Coney Island USA, the Mermaid Parade is the nation’s largest art parade and one of New York City’s greatest summer events. The Mermaid Parade celebrates the sand, the sea, the salt air and the beginning of summer, as well as the history and mythology of Coney Island, Coney Island pride, and artistic self-expression. The Parade is characterized by participants dressed in hand-made costumes as Mermaids, Neptunes, various sea creatures, the occasional wandering lighthouse, Coney Island post card or amusement ride, as well as antique cars, marching bands, drill teams, and the odd yacht pulled on flatbed.
